to present Earth Mother Bloom by Mexican-born, Baltimore-based artist Hoesy Corona. Corona is a Queer, Latinx artist, who has been exploring climate migration and refugees in his work over the last decade. Friends Artspace is thrilled to present Monolithic Forestry by Providence, Rhode Island based artist Theju Nimmagadda. This exhibition of extruded, brutalist seating is a love letter to the life and form of the Northern White Cedar 5” x 5” and an examination of mass-produced U.S. lumber. Nimmagadda begins each piece digitally as a mockup made in the video game Minecraft, and then translates it into a physical model made of Legos. These building simulators, both based in the logic of rectilinear construction, perfectly suit the orthogonal nature of the cedar beams. Through an involved process the trees have been transformed from natural, unconstrained forms into indistinguishable building blocks. This metamorphosis begins on industrial plantations, where the cedars are grown at an accelerated rate in monocultures and then shipped across the nation for consumption. The timbers are never given time to dry, causing them to immediately start imploding as their moisture content decreases and they begin to shrink. In Monolithic Forestry, this dramatic transformation is put on display, with the end grain planes in Nimmagadda’s finished works showcasing the checking, knots, dry rot, and growth rings of each individual cedar. Each end grain tile is a visual diagram documenting the vicious life cycle these trees were born into and the trauma of the supply chain. Together, these planes become living, breathing mosaics, highlighting the ongoing tension between nature and industry. All other surfaces of the forms are then sealed and stabilized with latex paints known as Safety Red, Safety Blue, and Safety Yellow, which are commonly used to coat industrial metal surfaces. These standardized colors harken back to the concise palettes of Minecraft and Lego. The cedar 5” x 5” jumps its fate line of forceful standardization from birth. Nimmagadda gives second life to the cedar timber by meticulously sanding and polishing its cross section, which refuses to be anything but relentlessly beautiful and unique, a quiet rebellion against third season with a solo exhibition, Ceremonies for a Sacred Life, by Baltimore and Richmond based artist, Angelique Scott. Scott’s new body of wheel-thrown and hand-built ceramic vessels explores ceremony as a vehicle for connection and healing. Nodding to her Afro-Caribbean heritage, Scott adorns her vessels with braids, bamboo earrings, and cowrie shells, embellished with gold and beading. Communion is the through line of the artwork. Scott created the vessels during her studio residencies in the mountains of Georgia and North Carolina while in spiritual collaboration with her ancestors, braiding intergenerational tradition into intimate, reverential objects. Formed and activated through ceremony, her offering bowls invite burning, meditation, and other ancestral restorative practices. The gallery is presenting artists Aspen Golann, Joanna Bloom, Kawabi, Meg Callahan, Nour Hage, Theju Nimmagadda, and Trey Jones. The works in this collection transform tradition, reclaiming inherited forms and techniques while reimagining their meaning. Aspen Golann reinterprets 18th and 19th century broom-making, turning domestic tools into sculptural tributes to collective labor. Kawabi’s wood and paper lighting draws on Japanese joinery to create sacred objects for an imagined ancestral home. Artists create contemporary heirlooms that slip outside of time, challenging the boundaries between past and future, such as Trey Jones’ futuristic Nerikomi-patterned woodworks, which could as easily belong to a centuries-old cabinet of curiosities as on a starship. Material is treated as memory, carrying stories, lineages, and the labor of those who came before. Nour Hage weaves hand-dyed cloth as acts of remembrance and resistance, reconnecting to matrilineal histories. Meg Callahan quilts from scraps of bedsheets and deadstock fabrics, while Theju Nimmagadda mosaics mass-produced cedar into intricate, precious forms. Joanna Bloom's ceramics are a mystical rumination on her connection to the Pacific Northwest’s landscapes. Each piece is made with deliberate, care-filled processes that imbue the work with a quiet power and an enduring resonance. This compendium follows a year of studied reverence for the abundance of Pacific Northwest landscapes and the quiet powers of the unseen: the animals that leave traces at night, the mythical wonder of plant migration, the celestial rhythms and ephemera of the Salish Sea. Rooted by her Catholic and Jewish heritage, Bloom transfigures whispers from the land into menorahs and candelabras. Lighting candles is an age-old ceremonial undertaking: an incantation, a remembrance, a wish, a celebration of miracles. The title of the exhibition pays homage to the gatherings that Bloom’s mother held every year to celebrate the flowering of her night-blooming cereus. Friends and family would convene in the dark to witness the cactus’ splendor. By daylight, the pendulous white blossoms were wilted bundles, almost as if nothing had ever happened. Like the magical rhythms of nature and the mysticism of the stories that shape her, Bloom encourages the viewer to push past what is readily visible. The raised relief of a flower or a crescent moon ornamentation is evident in the artwork, but sometimes the narrative detail is deliberately obscured by thick coats of slip. Lee is recognized as the foremost expert and steward of bojagi outside of its country of origin. Rooted in function, bojagi provides Lee with a framework for exploring inheritance, devotion, and mastery. The works are hand stitched from recycled and scrap materials, assembled through an intuitive, improvised process rather than a fixed pattern. For Lee, each stitch is a way of grounding the mind and placing wishes into the work, allowing intention and love to accumulate over time. Through this sustained attention, the pieced cloth is sanctified. Lee’s work has long been guided by good wishes; since her father’s recent passing, it has also become a mourning meditation. The artist has incorporated fragments of her father’s calligraphy parchment and pieces of his clothing into her bojagi. Through her grief practice, Lee moves deeper into the work of embedded memory and lasting memorials. About Youngmin Lee: Youngmin Lee is a textile artist who works with the traditions and techniques of bojagi. Her interest in textiles led her to study Clothing and Textiles in college, and she received an MFA in Fashion Design in South Korea. She draws on extensive research into bojagi, applying its principles to both traditional and contemporary art. After moving to California in 1996, Lee has worked to preserve the bojagi tradition, which embodies a philosophy of recycling and upcycling, as the works are made from pieces of fabric leftover from other projects. Lee works closely with the Asian American community through engagement projects and workshops at the Asian Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Saint Louis Art Museum. She has taught at local public schools to introduce and share Korean traditional textile art. In addition to teaching in person, she created the educational DVD Bojagi: The Art of Wrapping Cloths in 2013 to reach a wider audience. In 2019 and 2022, Lee received grants from the Alliance for California Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program as a mentor artist, teaching bojagi to her apprentice. Her new book, Bojagi: The Art of Korean Textiles, was published in 2024. In 2017, Lee founded the Korea Textile Tour to introduce Korean traditional textile art and culture to broader audiences. Her work has been exhibited and collected throughout the United States, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Romania, Turkey, and France.
