Friends Artspace is pleased to present Sporarium by Brooklyn-based, Japanese lighting designer and ceramicist Yuko Nishikawa.

At Sporarium, fantastical sculptures spring from all surfaces. The ceramic pendants and lamps have irregular, organic surfaces and soft coloration, growing directly from Nishikawa’s movement of making. 

Nishikawa describes the delight of opening and unloading her kiln to meet her transformed friends for the first time in their newest incarnations. She wants the inhabiter of her world to feel the same fascinating yet familiar encounter. "Piku piku" is a Japanese onomatopoeia that describes involuntary movements caused by unexpected contact. Sporarium aims to make the viewer feel piku piku, gently startling something latent inside. 

Light adds further growth and mystery to Nishikawa’s installation of ceramic sculptures. When each form is illuminated, it sprouts new life, unfurling expansive shapes on every plane.
